The weight does require a sturdy mic stand or tripod, though; a lightweight boom stand might sag or tip under its load.

Overall, the MXL CR77 sits in an interesting spot. It’s not trying to compete directly with budget workhorses, it’s heavier, flashier, and voiced a bit brighter. At around $179, it’s aimed at performers who want a microphone that doubles as a stage presence piece as much as a sound tool. For live vocals and broadcast-style delivery, it performs well, with strong rejection and a distinct tone. For acoustic instruments, less so.
