About the MXL v88 mic

The MXL V88 is a large diaphragm condenser microphone designed for studio and broadcast applications. It uses a 32mm gold-sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm with a cardioid polar pattern, making it suited for capturing vocals and acoustic instruments while reducing sound from the rear. The microphone operates on a low noise FET preamp with a fully balanced transformerless output, and it requires standard 48V phantom power. At under six inches tall and weighing about one pound, the V88 is relatively compact compared to many large-capsule condenser mics.

In terms of performance specifications, the V88 covers a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz, with a sensitivity rating of 25mV/Pa. It has an output impedance of 150 ohms, a signal-to-noise ratio of 80dB, and an equivalent self-noise level of 14dBA. The microphone can handle sound pressure levels up to 138dB (for 0.5% total harmonic distortion), making it capable of recording louder sources such as drums or amplified instruments without distortion. Its maximum output into a 1kΩ load is rated at +13dBu, and it consumes about 5.4mA of current.

Physically, the MXL V88 features a nickel-plated metal body and ships with a high-isolation shockmount and an aluminum flight case for storage and transport. Its compact size (53mm x 146mm) and durable build are intended to make it a practical option for both fixed studio use and portable setups. The design emphasizes a balanced tonal response, with a full low end, clear midrange, and a detailed but controlled high frequency range. This makes it adaptable to a variety of sources, including voice, acoustic guitar, drums, and general room recording.
