About the MXL 990 mic

The MXL 990 is a condenser microphone that became one of the most widely used entry-level studio mics after its release. It was notable for bringing large-diaphragm condenser technology into the sub-$100 price range, a category where such microphones had previously been uncommon. The 990 is built with a transformerless FET preamp and a mid-sized gold-sputtered diaphragm capsule. Its fixed cardioid pickup pattern focuses on sound from the front while rejecting much of the noise from the sides and rear, making it practical for home studios, podcasting, and general vocal or instrument recording.

From a technical standpoint, the MXL 990 offers a frequency response of 30Hz–20kHz, a sensitivity of 15mV/Pa, and an output impedance of 200 ohms. It has an equivalent self-noise of 20dBA (A-weighted) and a signal-to-noise ratio of 80dB (ref. 1Pa A-weighted). The microphone can handle sound pressure levels up to 130dB at 0.5% THD, which allows it to capture both vocals and moderately loud sources without distortion. Phantom power at 48V (±4V) is required for operation, which is standard for audio interfaces and mixers in modern recording setups.

Physically, the microphone is compact and solid, measuring 130mm in length with a diameter of 60mm, and weighing about 1.2 lbs (544g). It comes finished in a champagne-colored metal body, giving it a classic appearance that has remained unchanged since its release. Included accessories typically consist of a shock mount for vibration isolation, a stand adapter, and a hard carrying case. These bundled items make it easy to set up the 990 for both fixed studio use and portable recording situations.

The sound profile of the 990 emphasizes a clear top end and defined low frequencies, with a smooth midrange suited to both male and female vocals. Its cardioid polar pattern helps reduce environmental noise, though, as with any condenser microphone, recording space treatment remains important for best results. Users have employed it successfully for lead and background vocals, acoustic instruments, voice-over work, and podcasting. Its performance has also made it popular among DIY enthusiasts who modify the circuit and capsule to approximate the response of more expensive vintage microphones.

In addition to the standard XLR model, which requires an external preamp or interface, MXL also offers a USB version of the 990. The USB model includes an onboard analog-to-digital converter, allowing direct connection to a computer without additional equipment. Both versions maintain the same external design and general feature set, making the 990 accessible to a range of users, from beginners to experienced recordists seeking an affordable utility microphone.

Over the years, the 990 has maintained its reputation as one of the most widely adopted studio microphones in the budget category. Its balance of price, included accessories, and reliable performance has made it a staple in countless home studios. While not positioned as a high-end microphone, it occupies a unique space as an accessible entry point into condenser mic recording that continues to see regular use across different applications.
